Karuizawa Joint Bottling of HST 1999 14YO Sherry Cask #2316 61.3%

karuizawa-1999-14yo-sherry-cask-2316-61-3Nose: Dried fruits, marmalade, overripe apricots, oak, wood stain, maple syrup, oranges, pink grapefruit, praline, drying fresh tanned leather, tree sap. No sulphury notes, whoo hoo!
Palate: Very punchy without water with a fix of fizzy fruit sherbets, dried fruits, praline, nougat and oak. With water there’s some toffee, orange jus, pepper, strawberry conserve and licorice added.
Finish: Dried fruits, oak, strawberry conserve, mild peppermint and licorice. Finally dies on hints of leather and charcoal.
Last Word: A fine Karuizawa with a lot going on. Not a sulphury note to be found which puts it in the minority of Karuizawa sherry cask matured whiskies.

Rating: 88/100
*Note: Once again another problem with the cork on a Karuizawa bottling. On the 3rd opening of this bottle, the cork snapped in two. Had to fish out half the cork with wooden skewers and a pair of tweezers. Straight into the not good enough basket.

Chichibu On The Way 58.5% abv

d7k_7561Nose: Dried pears, malt, bran, varnish, caramel, popcorn. Quite oaky for one so young. Some leather with water added. A little incense with a lot of water added
Palate: Quite fiery without water. Dried pears, malt, bran, whole meal, salt, popcorn, caramel, oak, mango, cayenne pepper. Even with water this is one hot whisky.
Finish: Without water the overriding impression is peppery heat and some dry oak. Needs a lot of water to find hints of the mizunara influence(incense).
Last Word: One whisky that may have been better suited bottled at a lower abv.

Rating: 80/100

Yoichi Single Cask 1990-2001 10YO Wharehouse No.2 #223639 62%abv

p1010368_0Nose: Deep earthy tones. Caramel popcorn, high end Cuban cigars, blueberries, mild peat, cloves, pepper, stewed rhubarb, nutmeg, ginger bread. All wrapped up in an elegant package.
Palate: Again very deep and rich. Incredibly complex. Chewy toffee and malt, cloves, Cuban cigars, leather, ginger bread, raisin toast, earthy peat, sweet peat, blueberries, nutmeg, some minerals, walnuts, papaya and a slight oiliness.
Finish: Follows on the flavors from the palate and lingers on and on with some lovely mouth coating oiliness. Extremely approachable even at 62%abv.
Last Word: This baby is rare and it was a privilege to taste it. One of the very best whiskies I’ve tried and the best 10YO whisky I have tasted. Almost a spiritual experience. Can’t see another 10YO topping this one.

Karuizawa The Colors of Four Seasons 2nd Release 2000-2013 12YO #5173 64.8%abv

karuizawa-colours-of-four-seasons-2000-2012-12yo-64-8-5135Nose: Eggnog, toffee, key lime pie, lemon drops, barley, overripe pineapple, wood chips, papaya. Water adds apricot jam.
Palate: Honey smacks, fruit loops, toffee, wood chips, lemon fizz, honey yoghurt. Water brings our nougat and pineapple lumps. Smooth enough even without adding H20.
Finish: Shortish on apricot jam, pineapple lumps, barley and wood chips.
Last Word: Would have cracked 90 points I reckon with a stronger finish. At any rate a lot better/more interesting than most of those simple sulphur ridden sherry Karuizawa numbers that are overhyped in certain circles. Yes I’ll tell you how I really feel ; )

Rating: 88/100
*Note – Cork warning. I keep all my bottles upright of course but the cheap cork that came with this bottle has already cracked in 2 and I may have opened this 10 times at most. Not good enough!

Ichiro’s Malt Vintage Single Malt 1986-2007 58%abv

ichiros-malt-single-cask-1986-2Nose: Cantaloupe, white peach, licorice, strawberry flan, touch of burnt orange. After about 5 minutes some mild peat and dried seaweed.
Palate: Toffee, vanilla, licorice, camphor oil, white peach, burnt orange jus, nutmeg, marzipan and a little peat. Quite oily.
Finish: Burnt orange jus, toffee, licorice, peat, marzipan, the oily element continues and the vanilla returns on the finish with a little water added.
Last Word: Quite a brute really. There is an ever present base spirit element that diminishes the whole experience a few notches.

Hakushu Heavily Peated 2013 48%abv

hakushu-heavily-peated-2013-48Nose: Smoke infused lime, cucumber, pine, putty, medium earthy peat, hoisin sauce, pear jubes, green apple peels, lemon cough drops, corned beef, brine.
Palate: Huge hot prickly spices. Earthy peat, wet cement, lime, pine, straight earthiness, pickled ginger, pickles, salted macadamias, a bitter element, ash, corned beef. Adding water drives the ash/pine, ups the macadamias and adds back in the hoisin sauce.
Finish: Lime, brine, corned beef, pepper, pickled ginger then fades fast to earthy peat and ash.
Last Word: Not the most balanced of whiskies and you’d have to like ’em hot. Different enough from the 2012 to warrant the purchase.

Yamazaki Single Cask for JR Osaka Mitsukoshi Isetan 1998-2011 Sherry Butt #CU 70062 61%abv

yamazaki-single-cask-sherry-butt-for-isetan-jr-osaka-1998-61Nose: Beautifully rich, classic Yamazaki dark sherry. Leads with a bucket load of raisins. Blackberry conserve, ginger spice, stew rhubarb, balsamic, dark honey. Dark chocolate, oyster sauce, caramelised orange jus, sherry soaked oak. No harshness even at 61%.
Palate: Massive concentration of dried fruits, raisins, currents, papaya. Big salt, fresh ginger heat, black plums, toasted oak, some red wine like tannins. Water brings out leather, nutmeg, cocoa, blood oranges and ups the tannins.
Finish: Long and juicy. With water raisins, nutmeg, cocoa, oyster sauce, balsamic, menthol, almonds, dark chocolate and the drying tannins. Prefer this with only a few drops of water at the most.
Last Word: Color as black as ink in the bottle and as resolved as a good 18YO. Big, bold and beautiful. What a cask selection. Pays to be located only 25 minutes from the distillery me thinks. Not to be confused with cask #CU 70067 found at Isetan/s in Tokyo. 70062 is superior across the board.
