Karuizawa Vintage 1992. Cask number 6978. 62.8%abv

karuizawa-1992-6978-62-8

Nose: Some florals, apricot, sherry, golden syrup, vanilla, oak and the ubiquitous varnish. It is balanced from the get go.
Palate: Sweet. You can drink this neat, though it still has loads of punch. In no particular order, it has: florals, oak, sherry, stone fruits, raisins, currants and smoke. Again, very well balanced. With water, the cherry blossoms shine through.
Finish: Long and luscious, with mint, creamy nuts and lovely, trailing smoke and tobacco flavours.
General comment:  A truly excellent Karuizawa that lives up to the hype.

Kirin-Seagram Orchid 43%abv

kirin-orchid-blend-sherry-matured-43

Nose: Some Colgate mintiness. Chargrilled peppers, walnut, marmalade, freshly cut grass, putty, salt, citronella. Yeh, it’s a bit odd.
Palate: Softish delivery. Now the sherry influence starts to come through. Cherries, sultanas (ok, there’s the sherry bit), bananas, putty, brazil nut, black pepper.
Finish: Shortish and dry with putty, walnuts, sultanas and bananas.
Final Word: This appears to be some sort of whisky liqueur. The ingredients say “malt, grain, sherry,” which indicates that this is not just a sherry butt matured whisky but that sherry itself was added. Odd. Perfectly fine to drink, but nothing special.
Rating: 75/100

Dunbar Pure Malt (Kirin-Seagram). 42%abv

dunbar-pure-malt-42

Nose: Plasticine, cardboard, glue, oak, orange, candle wax, licorice… urinal cakes.
Palate: Quite bitter, with Plasticine, peanut shells, liquorice, oak. I hesitate to say urinal cakes again, as this might imply I’ve tried them, but this, I imagine, is what they might taste like.
Finish: Short and bitter with Plasticine, glue, orange and liquorice. The orange and licorice does not redeem this. Overall, the flavours don’t integrate well at all.
Last Word: This doesn’t taste or smell much like whisky, though the orange and liquorice may indicate some sort of Bourbon barrel influence. From nose to finish this is rather unpleasant. A complete misfire from Kirin.
Rating: 60/100

Hibiki 21-year-old. 43%abv

hibiki-21-43

Nose: An extremely rich bouquet; Seville oranges, bananas, licorice, polished leather, bourbon barrel oak, vanilla, orange coffee.
Palate: Smooth and creamy to start; then a big dollop of sweet spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, licorice. More of the Seville oranges plus white plums, leather and sweet cigar leaf.
Finish: Long, with a fruity/dry combination dominated by the flavors on the palate.
Last Word: A sophisticated blend. I highly recommend it.
Rating: 91/100

Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve. 46%abv

077

Nose: Quite gentle. The dominant note is honey. Also, lemon meringue, grapefruit and a little salt.
Palate: Pepper and white sauce over cauliflower. Ginger, lemon, grapefruit.
Finish: Short, with a little spice. Not a lot of power for 46 per cent alcohol, feels more like 40 per cent. Is this quite young, as I’m not picking up a lot of influence from the Mizunara wood?

Last Word: Easy enough to drink but not particularly memorable.
Rating: 79/100

Suntory Special Reserve 10YO 43%abv

suntory-special-reserve-whisky-aged-10-years-43-600x800

Nose: Nicely fruity: peaches, bananas and pineapple. Vanilla, gentle oak and sawdust. After a while, a vegetal element emerges balancing out the sweetness.

Palate: Immediate spiciness, nuts, fresh baked scones and stewed apples.

Finish: Nicely warming and mouth coating with a medium length; nuts and custard over stewed apples.

Last Word: A classy blend of good complexity.

Rating:87/100

Ichiro’s Malt Wine Wood Reserve. 46%abv

076

Nose: Reminds me of some sherry cask Scotches (e.g latest Macallan 12) more than a wine finish. Marmalade, figs, oak, chocolate, wood stain, soap. A little spirituous, but that’s probably enhanced by the style of the whisky.
Palate: Initially, very fizzy on the tongue. Orange sherbert? Brazil nut, bitter chocolate, raisins, pepper.
Finish: Pepper, marmalade, raisins. Kind of bittersweet. Quite long, with hot spices on the palate and then butter menthols.
Rating: 79/100

Ichiro’s Malt Six of Clubs 2000, 9-year-old. 57.9%abv

p1000869

Nose: Gunpowder/struck match, lime, white pepper, mushroom, mixed peel. With water, marzipan comes through.
Palate: Blood orange, burnt toffee, gunpowder/struck match, blackberry, wet earth. With water, the mixed peel zings.
Finish: Sweet spices, blackberries, Christmas pudding drizzled in warm treacle and buttered shrooms. Lots of struck match.
General Comment: Too much gunpowder/sulphur for my liking

Karuizawa 1997 13YO #3312 for Oxfam. 60.2%ABV

karuizawa-1997-13yo-sherry-butt-for-oxfam-3312-60-2

Nose: Oak, vanilla , sherry, raisins, red grape and a hint of white chocolate.
Palate: Without water, mainly Seville oranges and vanilla. Really needs water to tame it. Not particularly complex, the water brings out some nuttiness–at first creamy, then bitter. Also orange dark chocolate, sherry and more vanilla, but you have to work hard to pick up any of it.
Finish: Is fairly hot with or without water. The spirit actually numbs the palate which makes it difficult to pick up any subtleties. There’s a little cigar smoke.

Last Word: Overall, a simple and at times brutal malt that clubs the palate into a fairly useless state of submission. The nose is the highlight.
Rating: 78/100

Karuizawa 1991 19-year-old #3206 for Oxfam 60.8%

karuizawa-1991-19yo-sherry-butt-for-oxfam-3206-60-8

Nose: Sweet pipe tobacco, pureed dark summer fruits, sherry, raisins, blood oranges,
Palate: The sweet pipe tobacco dominates at first, then tangy oranges and cigar smoke dryness. Water brings some oiliness to the mouth feel, also dried mushrooms, moss and lemon pepper.
Finish: Long. Cigar smoke, oranges, pepper, vanilla. Drying. It is certainly better balanced than the 13YO for OxfAM but, like that one, lacks the complexity and wow factor of the better Japanese Malts.
Rating: 80/100

Ichiro’s Malt Single Cask #493 1991 18-year-old for Takashimaya. 46.55abv

p1000870

Nose: Orange infused oak. Lemon. Tinned peaches with chocolate custard. Pine, licorice, devilled eggs, camomile tea. Becomes more fresh and grassy with water.
Palate: Milk chocolate, malted shake, grilled red peppers, hint of coal fire. Water accentuates the maltyness.
Finish: Some bitterness playing against the malty sweetness, along with pine, black pepper and ash and smoke.
Last Word: This one became better and better with time. Very complex and well balanced and close to being my favorite Hanyu
Rating: 91/100

Ichiro’s Malt Single Cask #6080 2000 10-year-old. 61%abc

p1000871

Nose: Lovely creaminess. Grand Marnier chocolate liqueur. Smooth beautifully integrated oak. A little walnut and dried pineapple. Exotic incense, teak, the inside of a cigar shop, malt. Then, lots of vanilla, especially when water is added.
Palate: Creamy, nutty, sweet spices, oranges, pine-lime splice (an ice-cream we get in Australia). Water adds a little smoothness and brings the vanilla and malt to the fore, along with fermenting strawberries.
Finish: Long, warming and mouth coating. Lots of sweet wood spices, vanilla and strawberry dough.
Last Word: Excellent stuff.
Rating: 90/100

Nikka Pure Malt tarudashi whisky genshu. 55.1%abv

nikka-pure-malt-tarudashi-whisky-genshu-55-1

Nose: Fairly acetone at first, then becomes a little floral. Some pear, soap flakes. There is not a lot going on and what there isn’t very pleasing.
Palate: Varnish, red grape, some nuttiness. Quite bitter. Adding water just flattens this further.
Finish: Bitter, a little perfumey.

Last Word: I think this one has OD’d on E-150.
Rating: 65/100

yoichi-genshu-single-cask-20-year-old-cask-121940-56-per-cent-alcohol

Nose: Rich. Lovely toffee/caramel popcorn, Chicos Candies, malt, sweet apricots, white chocolate, marshmallows. Then, sweet tobacco and a hint of brine.
Palate: Creamy, chewy toffee, marshmallows, fruit tingles without the tingle. Some ashy dryness in the middle. Then, the white chocolate and sweet tobacco makes a return. Very smooth for 56 per cent.
Finish: Medium length, with a sweet/dry combo of the flavours of the palate. Very nice indeed.
Rating: 90/100

White Oak Crown Blended Whisky 43%abv

white-oak-crown-blend-43

Nose: Honey, toffee apple, fresh orange peel, malt, some grassyness and a little oak
Palate: Smooth and creamy, more malty than the nose, hints of chocolate, lemongrass, red grape, honey and some bitterness playing against the sweetness of the honey and chocolate
Finish: Short-medium, with bitter chocolate, red grape, honey and malt dominating.
Last Word: Smooth and easy to drink. Well balanced overall.
Rating: 80/100

Karuizawa Single Vintage Cask 1989 12YO # 7410. 61.3%abv

karuizawa-vintage-1989-12yo-7410-61-3

Nose: Heavy notes of baked goods such as warm pie crust and scones; sherry; bar wood, like you’d expect to smells in “Cheers”. Vanilla, varnish, and sandalwood.
Palate: A massive spice attack. sandalwood, playdough, vanilla, bubblegum, strawberry, and something like roast chicken. Sounds a little strange but it works.
Finish: Sweet, nutty, fruity, spicy and very long!
Last Word: A fantastic Karuizawa.
Rating: 91/100

karuizawa-vintage-cask-1982-20yo-sherry-butt-2510-58-2

Nose: Bold and clean. Sherry at first, sweet then dry. Fresh biscuits cooling on the kitchen bench. Raisins, Valencia oranges, mixed peel, cherry chocolate and mint.
Palate: Perfectly drinkable neat. Well layered flavours that basically follow the nose and with some lovely sweet spices. From one hell of a sherry butt.
Finish: Beautifully rounded, warming and long. Spicy sherried goodness.
Last Word: Power with balance, a truly great Karuizawa.
Rating: 92/100 Tasted from a sample.

Karuizawa Vintage Cask 1985 17-year-old #6885. 60%abv

Finish: Long and warming with a slight bitterness. Some curry powder heat on the top palate.
